Description: This flag, the national colors of the 89th Ohio Volunteer Infantry (O.V.I.), bears 34 gold painted stars arranged in a grid pattern on a blue canton. In the middle of the flag, painted in gold, is "89th. Regt. O.V.I. U.S.A." The flag, which measures 62.20 by 101.18 inches (158 by 257 cm), has gold fringe. Attached is a tag that documents the capture of the flag by the Confederates at the battle of Chickamauga, Georgia, in 1863 and its subsequent recovery in 1880 by William Barnes of Williamsburg in Clermont County. Barnes was a member of Company C of the regiment. The 89th O.V.I. formed in 1862 and was made up of men from Clermont, Brown, Ross, and Highland counties. During the battle of Chickamauga, nearly 200 men from the regiment were captured and sent to Libby and Andersonville prison camps, where many died. Ohio battle flags were on display at the Ohio Statehouse until the 1960s, when the state formed a committee to oversee efforts to restore the fragile flags. Some of the battle flags were on display on the plaza level of the Ohio History Center from 1970 until 1989. For conservation reasons, the flags have been in storage since 1989. Description: This is a photograph of a swallowtail guidon of 1st Ohio Light Artillery Regiment, Battery C, U.S. Volunteers. This swallowtail flag, with gold text reading "Ohio C" and crossed cannons is on a red field. The O.V.L.A. mustered in for war with Spain May 11, 1898 out of Zanesville, Ohio. Overall 20 officers and 708 enlisted men were commanded by Major Charles T. Atwell at Chickamauga, Georgia (also a Civil War site) with the loss of 13 soldiers. Ohio battle flags were on display at the Ohio Statehouse until the 1960s, when the state formed a committee to oversee the efforts to restore the fragile flags. Some of the battle flags were on display on the Plaza Level of the Ohio Historical Society from 1970 until 1989. For conservation reasons, the flags have been in storage since 1989. Made in 1895, this map includes Ohio monuments and tablet markers in relation to strategic movements of the Confederate and Union forces on September 18 and 19, 1863. The battle pitted the Union's Army of the Cumberland, commanded by General William Rosecrans of Ohio, against the Confederate's Army of Tennessee, commanded by General Braxton Bragg. The Northern army numbered approximately sixty thousand men, while the Confederates had forty-three thousand soldiers. Major General William S. Description: Regimental colors of the 18th Ohio Volunteer Infantry. Rectangular flag measures 187 cm high by 193 cm wide. Blue silk flag served as the regimental colors of the 18th Ohio Volunteer Infantry. The flag was manufactured in the United States between 1863 and 1865. The United States arms is painted in the flag's center. The arms consists of a bald eagle holding an olive branch in its left talon and a bundle of arrows in its right talon. The eagle holds in its beak a scroll with the motto "E Pluribus Unum" (Latin for "one out of many"). A shield with red and white stripes and a blue upper portion is positioned on the eagle's breast. Thirty-five gold painted stars are arranged in two arcs above the arms. Below the arms is a red painted banner. The flag has gold fringe on its top, right, and bottom sides. The dimensions are 187 by 193 cm. The 18th Ohio Volunteer Infantry was organized in May 1861 for three months' service, then reorganized in November 1861 at Camp Dennison near Cincinnati for three years' service. The regiment took part in the battles of Stones River and Chickamauga. In October 1864, with its term of service nearly expired, the 18th Ohio Volunteer Infantry was reorganized by consolidating the 1st, 2nd, 18th, 24th and 35th Ohio infantry regiments. This veteran regiment took part in the Battle of Nashville in December of that year. The regiment was mustered out in Augusta, Georgia, on October 9, 1865. Ohio battle flags were on display at the Ohio Statehouse until the 1960s, when the state formed a committee to oversee the efforts to restore the fragile flags. Description: This photograph of the James B. Steedman Monument in Toledo was taken in the 1880s. The memorial was originally located at St. Clair and Summit Streets, but was later moved to Jamie Farr Park. It was dedicated on May 26, 1887. Ohio Governor Joseph Foraker spoke at the unveiling. The base of the monument is inscribed with Steedman's name, birth and death dates, and the locations of four significant Civil War battles he was involved in: Chickamauga, Carrick's Ford, Perryville and Nashville. The bronze statue of General Steedman caps the monument, which stands 26 feet tall. This photograph measures 8" x 10" (20.32 x 25.4 cm). Civil War General James B. Steedman (1817-1883) was born in Pennsylvania and moved to Ohio in 1838. He was editor of the Northwestern Democrat in Napoleon, Ohio and served in the Ohio House of Representatives in 1847-1848. After serving as editor of the Toledo Times he decided to become a lawyer. When the Civil War erupted, however, he recruited men for the Fourteenth Ohio Volunteer Infantry (O.V.I.) and became a colonel. He was promoted to Brigadier-General by 1862 and went on to lead his troops at Perryville, Chickamauga, Atlanta and Nashville. After the war he served briefly as Military Commander of Georgia. He then continued his career as an editor and lawyer, serving as a Senator, editor of the Toledo Times and Chief of Police of Toledo. View on Ohio Memory.
